Primary Purpose of the Position
The High School Visual Arts Teacher inspires and equips students with the skills to explore and express themselves through a wide range of artistic media and practices. The teacher develops students’ technical skills, creativity, and critical thinking, while fostering appreciation for visual culture and the role of art in society. The Visual Arts Teacher contributes to a dynamic learning environment where students are encouraged to take risks, reflect on their process, and produce meaningful works of art in alignment with the school’s mission and values.
Main Duties and Responsibilities
Plan and deliver engaging, standards-based instruction in visual arts, including drawing, painting, sculpture, design, digital media, and mixed media.
Develop a sequential curriculum that balances technical skill-building, conceptual development, and art history/context.
Differentiate instruction to support students with varied interests, skill levels, and learning profiles.
Encourage experimentation, creative risk-taking, and critical reflection in the artistic process.
Assess student learning using a variety of approaches, providing constructive feedback.
Organize and curate student exhibitions, both within the school and in the wider community.
Foster a safe, inclusive, and collaborative studio environment that promotes creativity and respect.
Maintain art studios, equipment, and materials, ensuring safe and effective use.
Integrate technology into art instruction, including digital design tools and media.
Collaborate with colleagues to connect visual arts with other subject areas and interdisciplinary projects.
Communicate regularly with parents and guardians regarding student progress and achievements.
Participate actively in departmental, divisional, and whole-school meetings and initiatives.
Certifications and Education – Required
Bachelor’s degree in Visual Arts, Art Education, or related field.
Valid teaching certification/license in Visual Arts (U.S. or internationally recognized equivalent).
Desired
Master’s degree in Visual Arts, Art Education, Fine Arts, or related discipline.
Specialized training in areas such as digital media, photography, or design.
Experience – Required
Minimum of five years of teaching experience, preferably in a high school setting.
Demonstrated experience teaching and assessing across a variety of artistic media.
Desired
International teaching experience or work in diverse educational environments.
Professional practice and exhibition experience as a visual artist.
Experience with IB Visual Arts, AP Art and Design, or equivalent international curricula.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities – Required
Strong knowledge of visual art techniques, materials, and safety procedures.
Ability to guide students in both technical skill-building and conceptual development.
Effective classroom management and the ability to foster a productive studio environment.
Strong communication skills for engaging with students, families, and colleagues.
Desired
Familiarity with digital art tools, photography, and new media.
Understanding of international art education frameworks (e.g., IB, AP).
Ability to mentor students in portfolio development for college/university applications.
